Borderlands is a futuristic science fiction first person shooter with role playing elements from Gearbox Software, who previously created the Brothers in Arms series of games. The game seeks to move FPS games on from the evolutionary cul-de-sac some people believe them to currently inhabit. Borderlands is set on Pandora, a planet at the edge of the galaxy where colonists have been drawn by the expectation of vast mineral wealth. However, when the planet turns out to be barren, the rich leave, and the poor are abandoned to chaos and lawlessness: a futuristic wild frontier like the American old west. The remaining settlers elect to try to find and exploit abandoned alien technology as their route to getting off this forsaken planet. Pandora's vicious indigenous life-forms decide that the settlers look like an appealing snack. In this hostile and dangerous environment, you play as a mercenary treasure hunter. And here the RPG elements of the game come into play - to establish the trust of the locals, you have to undertake missions to win their favour. These may be collecting or hunting missions.... and while this aspect of the game is similar to role playing games, the focus is very much on real time 3D action. The game continues in this vein: there is a main story to progress through, but there are side missions that can be followed at any time to help you gain items and experience. Experience enables players to level up, RPG style - so the game has no difficulty levels, instead featuring a scalable challenge system. If a particular battle is too tough for you, back track, complete some side-quests and then try again with improved abilities and equipment. When it comes to equipment, Borderlands has another surprise up its sleeve - a truly phenomenal amount of different weapons. A weapons "manufacturing" engine uses a randomise feature to create truly mind numbing numbers of combinations - over 600,000 different weapons, including handguns, machine guns and sniper rifles. But also with alien technology, plasma rifles and rocket launchers too. Players will always be able to search out bigger, badder and better weapons. And to avoid screeds of stats to tell you what a weapon does - they are colour coded to give you an at-a-glance idea of their capabilities. Just as the weapons of Borderlands are randomised, so is the terrain. Main locations such as towns are fixed, but the landscape between them is generated just for the game you are playing. Borderlands also has a multi-player co-operative mode, in which, any experience earned by completing missions is shared between team members equally, because everyone's skills will be required to successfully complete a mission.

Brick (Berserker)
A massive specimen of a man who likes to use his fists to smash the enemy above all else. He wears a necklace adorned with the paw of his beloved deceased dog. He fills in the tank niche and can take quite a beating. His class specific skill is being able to go into a state called "berserker" which greatly reduces the damage he takes for a short period and makes his melee attacks extremely potent. His Brawler tree increases the power and duration time of Berserker, and also adds damage to his melee attacks. His Blaster tree increases his proficiency with weapons, mainly explosives. The Tank tree increases his maximum health and affects how fast his shield will recharge, and how much damage it can take.
Lilith (Siren)
Once a human, Lilith at one point was turned into a siren. One of only six Sirens, they are a group of people with unbelievable powers, but no way to control them. She comes to Pandora in search of another Siren, in an effort to find out more about herself. Lilith's most iconic ability is called "Phase Walk", where she will teleport herself into another dimension where Lilith becomes invisible and can sneak around enemies with massively increased speed. Upon revealing herself, she detonates a shock-wave that can do area effect damage to all enemies.[4] Her skill trees are Controller, which makes Lilith's Phasewalk and melee attacks more powerful; Elemental, which makes her more powerful with guns by increasing their rate of fire and making the elemental effects of weapons have a higher chance of happening; and The Assassin tree makes her critical chances become higher, and increases her Phasewalk melee attack.
Mordecai (Hunter)
Mordecai came to Pandora in search of a man from his past named Demosthenes. Upon learning that Demosthenes has died, Mordecai sets off to learn how he died and what he was carrying. Mordecai is most proficient with pistols and sniper rifles. His class specific skill is the ability to release a deadly pet Bloodwing which can be trained to kill multiple people at one time. Mordecai's Gunslinger skills benefit his proficiency with pistols (specifically, revolvers). His Sniper tree adds damage bonuses to sniper rifle and makes him a more proficient sniper, and his Rogue tree serves to improve his pet Bloodwing.
Roland (Soldier)
Roland is a former soldier of the Crimson Lance, a sort of highly trained private military that disregards law and order. A decade-old vendetta is rekindled when Roland learns that the leader of the Brigadiers has a suspiciously similar name to a man he has sworn to kill. Roland's class specific skill is a turret. It can be specialized to deal damage, heal teammates, or spawn ammo. His other skills involve increasing the damage he can inflict and making his bullets heal teammates.[4] His skill trees are: Medical which specializes him in healing himself and teammates, Support which improves the effectiveness of his turret, and Infantry which improves his damage with weapons.
-> Quests:
Like traditional RPGs, much of the player's time is taken up by quests. There are 160 quests of varying length and complexity, 30 of these being part of the story and the other 130 as side quests. Many of these quests are not mutually exclusive, and can be completed together. Each quest carries its own rewards, such as new weapons, or perhaps revealing a new piece of the story. After beating the game, a second play through becomes available, with the same character statistics but with harder enemies. The same quests are available, but with better rewards.[4] For console versions of the game a two player split screen is available for all game modes.
